A calmer way to plan your money
Outset Money budgets by paycheck. It shows what’s safe to spend until payday, sets money aside for bills and goals, and never turns a number red.
Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Free to start; Pro is $9.99 a month.
Tap the eye to hide the balance, just like in the app.
Budget by paycheck
Plan each paycheck as it lands, so the plan matches when money actually arrives.
One number for today
What’s safe to spend until payday, and about how much that is each day.
Amber, never red
Going past plan shows up in amber, with a nudge to cover it from another category. Nothing on screen scolds you.
Every dollar has a job
When you’re paid, Outset plans that paycheck: bills and installments first, then goals, then everyday spending like groceries and dining out. Change an amount, move money between categories, or add a new one, and the plan keeps up.
- Setup takes a couple of minutes: how often you’re paid, a typical paycheck, monthly bills, an emergency fund and everyday categories. Each new paycheck starts from the last plan.
- What’s left in an everyday category rolls into the next paycheck, and so does overspending, so the plan stays honest. Any category can turn rollover off.
- Bills and goals are set aside first, so they never inflate what’s safe to spend.
- Insights compares everyday spending with last month, by category and over six months.
Write it the way you’d say it
Tap the + button and type a short note. Quick add picks out the amount, the merchant and a likely category, and you check it before you save.
Activity lists every entry by day. You can edit or delete any of them, on any plan.
- Merchant
- Corner Café
- Category
- Dining out
Know what’s due before payday
Bills puts your bills, plan payments and paydays on one calendar, then splits what’s due into before and after your next payday. Buy-now-pay-later plans sit right alongside, with the payments left and what’s still owed.
- Mark a bill paid and Outset records the payment and moves it to the next due date.
- Turn on reminders and one arrives at 9am the day before something is due. They’re scheduled on your phone, so they work offline.
- While the app lock is on, amounts stay off the lock screen.
Savings that know when they’ll be done
Start with a cushion. Your emergency fund shows as runway: how many months your savings would cover your planned spending if income stopped.
Other goals can have a date, like holiday gifts by December. Each one shows when it will be ready at your pace, or how much to set aside each paycheck to make its date. Add or take out money whenever you need to.
Ask about your own money
Ask Outset answers questions about your budget in plain words, like “Can I afford a weekend trip?” or “What’s due before payday?” Answers can include a chart, or a button to act on what it suggests. Tap the mic to ask out loud.
- The free plan includes one question a month.
- Pro includes up to 30 questions a day.
Ask Outset asks before it sends anything. Your question and the budget details needed to answer it go to Anthropic’s Claude, and you can turn sharing off in Settings.

Questions people ask
Does it connect to my bank?
No. You add entries yourself, and Quick add turns a short note like “coffee 4.50 at corner café” into one. Outset never sees your bank accounts or passwords.
What does “safe to spend” include?
What’s left in your everyday categories until payday, including anything that rolled over, minus spending that doesn’t have a category yet. Bills and goals are already set aside, so they don’t count.
How do I sign in?
With Apple, Google, or a code sent to your email. There’s no password to keep.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Your budget is stored on your phone and syncs when you’re back online. Bill reminders are scheduled on the phone, so they arrive offline too.
What does Ask Outset share, and with whom?
Before your first question, Ask Outset asks for permission. After that, each question and the budget details needed to answer it go to Anthropic’s Claude. You can turn sharing off in Settings at any time.
What happens after 50 entries on the free plan?
You can add more next month, or upgrade to Pro for unlimited entries. Nothing you’ve already entered is removed, and you can still edit or delete it.
Can I get my data out, or delete it?
Export every entry as a CSV from Settings. You can delete your account and its data permanently from Settings, or at tryoutset.com/money/delete-account.
